What is the BUCS Conference?
British University College Sport (BUCS) is the new body established to oversee the delivery of sport within Higher Education.
Our vision is to establish a world class higher education sporting organisation. This will be achieved by supporting our members in the provision of first class facilities, programmes and services to enable participation in and playing a lead role in the development of sport and active recreation within the wider UK sporting community and beyond.
The
2008 conference will be the first event for BUCS and we hope to attract over 300
key decision makers and influencers involved in sport in the higher and further
education sectors. These include Directors of Sports, Athletic Union Presidents
and staff, Marketing Managers, Fitness Managers and Sports Development Managers.
It also attracts partners working with Higher and Further Education Institutions
including the English Institute of Sport, Local Authorities, and Sports Councils.
This year's theme 'Realising Ambition' focuses on the BUCS vision to establish
a world class higher education sporting organisation, exploring current practice
and future possibilities at local, regional, national and international level.
This will include:
The conference format will build on previous years and will feature keynote speakers and break out sessions to allow delegates to interact and reflect on conference themes.

Building
on the previous success and listening to the feedback the 2008 Conference focuses
on providing opportunities for a sustained, high quality interaction between delegates
and sponsors and exhibitors of the event and delegates.
The Trade Show
is an integral part of the conference and will be held on Thursday 26th June.
It offers suppliers excellent exposure to delegates such as Directors of Sport,
Athletic Union Presidents, Fitness Managers and Sports Development officers from
a diverse range and size of institutions .
The Trade Show is held over
a dedicated two hour slot (12.00 -14.00) during which a buffet lunch and refreshments
will be served. No other activities are scheduled at this time to ensure that
exhibitors receive the full attention of the delegates and gain maximum contacts
and benefit from the show.
We will be limiting the number of trade stands
to ensure that all stands are in areas of high footfall and are fully visible.
If you are interested in booking a stand please contact Susannah
Attwell or Claire

The
2008 BUCS Conference will take place between Tuesday 24th June and Friday 27th
June. It is organised by BUSA and UCS with the assistance and support of our hosts,
the University of Sussex..
The University of Sussex is located at Falmer,
on the outskirts of Brighton, within easy reach of London and major international
airports (Gatwick and Heathrow).
How to get there
By train
Purchase
your ticket through to Falmer Station, which is immediately opposite the University
entrance (pedestrian access to campus is through the underpass). Visitors travelling
via London and the West need to change trains at Brighton Station for Falmer.
Falmer Station is well served by frequent local trains which run between Brighton
and Lewes - the journey to Falmer Station from Brighton takes about eight minutes.
(You can also travel to Falmer Station from London and the east via Lewes, using
the same local train service.) For train times, please consult the Southern Railway
timetable. National Rail enquiries - 08457 484950
By
car
The University is on the A27 road between Brighton and Lewes, about
four miles (six kilometres) from the centre of Brighton. Visitors driving from
London and the north should follow the M23/A23 road towards Brighton. Before you
reach Brighton town centre, take the A27 eastbound which is signposted to Lewes.
Drivers from the east or west should take the A27 direct to the University. (Please
note, opposite the University of Sussex campus at Falmer is the University of
Brighton's Falmer site. You should follow the signs to 'Sussex University'.)
Parking
There are two designated visitor car parks (opposite Sussex House, and in
front of the East Slope accommodation); to gain access you need to announce your
arrival to University security staff via the intercom system. Car parks are unattended
and objects of value should not be left in vehicles. Please go immediately to
the registration where you will be given a parking permit for the duration of
conference.
By
bus
Bus number
25 runs between the centre of Brighton and the University - stopping at Churchill
Square and Old Steine - bringing passengers directly onto the campus. In addition,
bus services 28, 29, 728 and 729 operate between Brighton (Old Steine) and destinations
east of Falmer. They all stop right outside the University.
By
taxi
Taxis are available at Brighton and Lewes Railway Stations and in
central Brighton; it is about four miles (six kilometres) from the centre of Brighton
to the University of Sussex. (There is no taxi service at Falmer Station.) Please
note that traffic in Brighton can be congested and it is often quicker to take
the train to and from Falmer (journey time about eight minutes). Streamline Taxis
(Brighton) - 01273 747474
By
coach
Coaches to Brighton leave from London Victoria Coach Station and
arrive at Brighton Pool Valley Coach Station. Services depart every hour during
the day and the journey takes approximately one hour and 45 minutes. From Pool
Valley it is a short walk - approximately 100 metres - to the Old Steine where
you can catch a bus (see section on Bus travel) to the University, or alternatively
take a taxi. National Express Coaches enquiries - 08705 808080
By air
London Gatwick Airport is much closer to the University of Sussex than London
Heathrow and has better transport links to Falmer. From Gatwick take the train
to Brighton or Lewes and change for Falmer (see section on Train travel).
From
Heathrow you can take the underground (London Transport) to Victoria Railway Station
and then the train to Brighton and on to Falmer. Alternatively, coaches (number
747) run from both Gatwick and Heathrow Airports to the centre of Brighton (from
Heathrow - this is a good option if you have lots of luggage).
If you
are arriving at London City Airport take the train from Silvertown and City Airport
to Canning Town, then tube to London Bridge, and then the train to Brighton and
on to Falmer.
If you would like further information or want to discuss these opportunities in further detail, please contact either Susannah Attwell s.k.attwell@exeter.ac.uk or Claire Powell claire@busa.org.uk
