The NASS survey has been developed to complement the Sport England Active People survey, undertaken in 2006 which has sought to capture the wider population’s activity levels in sport and physical activity. As the professional sports body that seeks to promote excellence in the provision, management and development of sport in higher & further Education, University and College Sport have been working to try and address this shortfall in partnership with the home nation sports councils, British University Sports Association and UUK.

It is against this background that UCS commissioned Leisure-net Solutions Ltd (LNS) to conduct the first ever NASS. The aim of the survey was to establish benchmark figures on a national, regional and individual establishment basis for:

- Facility Usage by staff, students and the community, in over 13 key sports and activities
- Competitive sport played by students in 35 key sports against other institutions
- Student activity levels and for their attitudes and perceptions towards physical activity
